From Chucky to Annabelle to Slappy, pop culture has seen its fair share of evil dolls hellbent on murder, destruction, and all-around chaos over the years. But where those toys derive life and motivation through otherworldly means, a newcomer to the genre — breakout icon M3GAN — is something all her own.
“M3GAN’s such a powerful, evil creation … [She] is obviously different to all the other killer dolls that are created. She’s not supernatural, she’s technology coming to life,” horror icon James Wan explains in a brand-new featurette below, teeing up M3GAN 2.0 (in theaters June 27; click here for tickets). Wan is back as producer on the sequel alongside Jason Blum following the merger of their two production banners: Atomic Monster and Blumhouse. For his part, Mr. Blum describes the sophomore installment as “bigger, badder, and bloodier” than its predecessor.
“There’s some fun, really creepy stuff we do. Blumhouse and Atomic Monster were just all for it,” teases returning director Gerard Johnstone, who wrote the screenplay this time around (based on an original story from Wan and original M3GAN scribe, Akela Cooper). Johnstone is also an executive producer alongside Adam Hendricks, Greg Gilreath, Michael Clear, Judson Scott, and Mark D. Katchur.

The new film takes place two years after M3GAN’s creation, rampage, and defeat. Since then, Gemma (sequel producer Allison Williams) and Cady (Violet McGraw) have kept her trapped inside a home assistant device, but there’s no holding a genie in the bottle forever. When a new threat emerges, a brand spanking new killing machine based on M3GAN’s underlying technology and dubbed Amelia (Ivanna Sakhno), it’s up to M3GAN to save the day — this time with a few badass upgrades.
Brian Jordan Alvarez and Jen Van Epps return to play Gemma’s loyal colleagues, Cole and Tess, while Aristotle Athari (Saturday Night Live), Timm Sharp (Percy Jackson and the Olympians) and Emmy nominee Jemaine Clement (What We Do in the Shadows) tackle brand-new characters.
