James Gunn has criticized the prevalence of meaningless “cameo porn” in recent superhero movies. During a discussion on Threads, the director of Superman: Legacy agreed with a commenter who expressed exhaustion with superhero movies featuring characters who appear on screen for a brief moment just to fulfill a checkbox. Gunn believes that if a character is included in a film, they should have a narrative reason to be there. He clarified that he doesn’t oppose fun cameos as long as they don’t disrupt the story, emphasizing that it’s the plot contrivances resulting from cameos that he objects to.
Gunn also addressed accusations that his upcoming Superman reboot would have a “large cast” and be filled with cameos. He clarified that the film is not actually large in terms of the cast and explained that it’s normal for single protagonist films to include other characters. He denied that the roles in Superman: Legacy are cameos.
Superman: Legacy, which will be released on July 11, 2025, will mark the launch of DC’s new film universe, led by Gunn and his co-CEO of DC Studios, Peter Safran.
This summer, it was announced that David Corenswet and Rachel Brosnahan had been chosen for the lead roles of Superman and Lois Lane in the film. The decision was made after screen tests involving six actors, including Nicholas Hoult and Tom Brittney for Superman, and Emma Mackey and Phoebe Dynevor for Lois Lane.
