About the Book:
Having unwittingly just kicked a viable option to escape Fairyland through a portal, Gertrude must find another exit strategy. Fortunately for her, Duncan Dragon has a key to another gate. There’s a catch. A witch named Terribella isn’t too keen on letting Duncan leave without a fight.
Reader’s Notes:
I can never get enough of Mr. Young’s work with I Hate Fairyland. I love all of the creative ways he comes up with to make a play on words. There’s always a fun adventure. Most importantly, I love Gertrude’s “no fluffs given” attitude because there are times I would love to be able to respond to things the way she does.
That “no fluffs given” approach of Gertrude’s also makes for a lot of teachable moments. Gertrude is constantly finding herself in situations where she is needing favors from people that she has crossed in the past. My dad once told me to be careful of the foot you step on today because it could be connected to the ass you have to kiss tomorrow. If she played better with others she would not be in that position. Of course, if she were more docile Gertrude wouldn’t be the character we know and love.
The artwork on the cover and interior pages doesn’t have the vividness and detail of Kyle Hotz or Todd McFarlane. It doesn’t need to. It meshes so perfectly with the story that I would be disappointed to see the artistic style change. A lot would be lost in the outlandish facial expressions that we get and I’m not willing to make that trade.
I Hate Fairyland has been one of my favorites in my pull list for quite some time. It’s filled with action, laughs , and ways to curse in the workplace that won’t get you fired. If you desire any of these things this geek on a budget highly recommends that you get to know Gertrude as soon as possible!
