Oh oh…Steph and Ian were so caught up in their holiday celebrations that they forgot to review the last three episodes of Batman: Wayne Family Adventures!!! But don’t worry, they recently caught up with each other and shared their thoughts on the season 2 finale!!
Steph: Hey Ian!! It’s been a while. I completely got carried away with the holidays and forgot to review the last few episodes of Batman: Wayne Family Adventures! Were your holiday shenanigans as distracting as mine?
Ian: Absolutely! They were quite enjoyable. But I must say, Wayne Family Adventures was also very enjoyable!
Steph: It definitely was, especially Episode #114 “Even The Best Detectives…”
Ian: I knew you would love that one! Did you guess what the big “villain takedown” was before the end punch line?
Steph: Oh, definitely! Wayne Family Adventures doesn’t usually have those intense plot scenarios, so I had a feeling it would be a phrasing issue! Do you think the Bat/Cat shipping has been more of a developing storyline or just a recurring character trait?
Ian: I think it’s more of a recurring character trait. It seems like Catwoman is portrayed as Bruce’s girlfriend who occasionally joins the family. However, there could be some development happening behind the scenes.
Steph: I agree! I did find it irresponsible of the kids to destroy a potential bomb without examining it, but other than that, I really enjoyed this episode.
Ian: Overall, I don’t think Wayne Family Adventures focuses too much on character development. It’s more about callbacks. But the upcoming episodes might be different!
Steph: I loved that Steph, Tim, Damian, and Duke form a little “younger kids” group within the family. It’s great to see them as a mini friend group. They even embarrassed Duke on his date in the past.
Ian: It’s awesome how the comic adds these dynamics within the family. Instead of just showing all the kids as friends, they develop smaller groups within the family. And Selina knows the family well enough to expect scenarios like this and not ruin a date.
Steph: Absolutely! Remember when Batman’s sweet-talking was broadcasted and Steph was traumatized, but Selina took it in stride? Also, Starbite did a beautiful job illustrating Selina in this episode.
Ian: The art in this episode was top-notch! Lots of dynamic poses and action scenes, even though they were against a dinner table covered in a sheet.
And now for the season 2 finale, episodes #115 and #116, “Batman and the Signal” Parts 1 and 2. I really enjoyed the first part. It gave us a glimpse into Duke’s powers (although I’m still a bit confused), and he had to confront a more serious version of what Tim has been dealing with.
Ian: I agree that Duke’s powers can be confusing in the main comics, but they were made more coherent in this episode. This two-parter definitely felt like a finale, unlike the season 1 finale with Superman meeting Harley Quinn, which was cute but not climactic. There were so many callbacks in these episodes, and they felt more like character development. Duke’s relationship with the family has actually grown!
Steph: It did feel a bit abrupt, but considering that Wayne Family Adventures isn’t focused on developing storylines, it was still within reason. Duke’s arc has been more about his relationships with the family.
Ian: Exactly! I liked how they referenced Duke’s two-parter with Batwing, where he learned from the Bat-kids and felt confident enough to lead the attack. It showed his growth and the relationships he has built.
Steph: The first three-parter helped him understand why having relationships outside the vigilante circle is challenging. It was something he had to discover for himself as a young man. As for the finale, I have to admit I was a bit disappointed. They promised to show everyone in episode #115, but they only appeared at the very end of #116, and I’m not even sure what they did.
Ian: I wish they had included everyone in the attack. I understand that drawing everyone in a fight scene might not be the focus of Wayne Family Adventures, but it would have been a better artistic choice. However, I still enjoyed the finale. Duke being the new kid in episode one and now being a beloved member of the family who has found his place was well thought out. It leaves me wondering where the series will go next, especially since Webtoons promises that it will return!
Steph: Definitely. I did find myself zoning out a bit during the talking scenes. Thankfully, they illustrated some scenarios that Duke mentioned, but I still found it a bit boring. But that’s just my personal opinion.
Ian: It’s interesting how a narrative misstep can affect readers differently. Personally, I was happy to see the whole family welcoming “The Signal/Duke” to the Batcave. It was great to see everyone together and happy.
Steph: We both agree that having everyone join in the attack would have been better, but I wasn’t as sad about it not happening. As long as everyone is together and happy, that’s how I like my finales!
Ian: Looking forward to next season (if we get one!), Red Hood, Zatanna, and Vixen have all ended, right?
Steph: Yes, all the other DC Webtoons have had their series finales. I really hope we get at least one more series launched this year, maybe even two or three! It’s a great way for DC to produce content for new readers, and expanding into other markets like Walmart would be fantastic. Maybe they could even create Wayne Family Adventures Lego sets!
Ian: That would be cool! Although LEGO Batman already dominates the Lego market, it’s been a while, and they should target the new generation of kids. Personally, I prefer Wayne Family Adventures over Batwheels when it comes to toys for a younger audience.
Steph: In the next season, I hope we see more development of all the characters and their relationships. Especially Bat/Cat.
Ian: Absolutely! Let’s have some recurring storylines involving Bruce, Damian, and that evil PTA lady! The Bat-kids can be a part of it too!
Steph: And I predict we’ll see more of Bernard, although I hope not too much.
Ian: Why do you think that?
Steph: It seems like internet people love Bernard.
Ian: I’m not entirely convinced. I think only a portion of internet users love Bernard, but not everyone. But I was curious if you had any specific predictions…
Overall, Steph and Ian discuss their thoughts on the last three episodes of Batman: Wayne Family Adventures, including their favorite moments, character development, and hopes for the next season.
