The third episode of Halo Season 2, titled “Visegrad,” continues the intricate chess-like movement of characters and storylines. This episode sets the stage for a major battle that is to come in Episode 4. With its depth and focus on each scene and character interaction, “Visegrad” proves that Season 2 of Halo is operating on a much higher and more competent level than Season 1.
Off Books Mission
In this episode, Master Chief (Pablo Schreiber) leads the Spartan Silver Team on a search and rescue mission. They are looking for Cobalt Team at the Visegrad communications relay on Reach. However, Chief reveals to his team that they are off-book and all alone. UNSC command and ONI don’t believe that the Covenant has infiltrated Reach. The rest of Silver Team approaches the relay with trepidation.
Rumble at the Relay
At the relay site, Corporal Talia Perez (Cristina Rodlo) is shown sleeping at the radio while listening to some chatter. Meanwhile, Silver Team infiltrates the relay but doesn’t find Cobalt Team. They discover a recording of a strange communication message in an indecipherable language. Quick cuts between the Spartans and Perez reveal that the signal is a Covenant message, and Perez seems to know how to translate it. Silver Team is then confronted by a squad of UNSC Marines who are assigned to bring them back for going AWOL. After a tense standoff, Master Chief storms the locker room but doesn’t find Cobalt Team. Fellow Spartan Kai (Kate Kennedy) talks Master Chief down, and they agree to return to base.
The Good Son
Colonel James Ackerson (Joseph Morgan) is shown caring for his father, who is suffering from Alzheimer’s. Ackerson informs his father that he has to leave and can’t take him along. The elder Ackerson remembers that his son confided in him about a terrible calamity that is approaching. He reminisces about a childhood memory of having a peeing accident on his brother and how they grew up to build great structures on Reach. Mr. Ackerson remembers walking his family down a bridge on Reach, including his wife, James, and James’ sister Julia. When the old man gets excited to see his wife and daughter, James must inform him once again that they are dead. His father becomes angry and frustrated, but James manages to calm him. Before leaving, his father makes him promise not to let the Covenant capture him.
BAD SPARTANS
Admiral Jacob Keyes (Danny Sapani) reprimands Silver Team for going AWOL. He accuses Master Chief of being delusional, and John’s evidence (Cobalt’s charted flight plan) appears to be wrong. Chief accuses Ackerson of treachery, but the Admiral dismisses it and puts the entire team on leave. The rest of Silver Team confronts Chief, including Kai, who expresses doubt in him after he claims to have seen the supposedly dead Covenant “Blessed One,” Makee, on Sanctuary. Chief loses control of his unit in that moment.
Rubble Trouble
Soren-066 (Bokeem Woodbine) is still missing, and his wife Laera (Fiona O’Shaughnessy) is filled with dread. Laera is grabbed by someone while walking through the streets of The Rubble. It turns out to be Kwan Ha (Yerin Ha), Soren’s old ally who has been hiding in The Rubble. Kwan reveals that Soren betrayed them and sold them off to authorities, and their family is in danger. Laera returns home to find Soren’s top lieutenants waiting with her son, Kessler. She is informed that Soren’s ship has been repaired early, and they are all heading out to find him. Laera tries to buy time and prepare Kessler to flee. Kwan reveals herself as hiding in Soren’s home, which surprises Laera.
BAD CHIEF
Master Chief is being escorted to a psyche evaluation but instead knocks out his guards while on the elevator ride.
There Goes Date Night
Riz-028 visits her friend and trainer Louis-036 at his home. She discovers that Louis is romantically involved with the holistic healer he introduced her to. Riz is welcomed in for dinner and begins to discuss other options for her life outside of being a Spartan.
The Need to Fight
Kai approaches Ackerson to request that Silver Team be reinstated. She volunteers to lead the team until Master Chief is reinstated. Ackerson reveals that Chief escaped after beating down his guards. He suggests that Chief’s mind may be irreparably broken. Kai is conflicted and asks for orders on what to do.
Get To The Ship
Kwan and Laera plan to hijack Soren’s ship and escape. They discuss the tragedy that caused Kwan to question her path of defending the portals to Halo. They wait for an opening and sneak onto Soren’s ship with Kessler. However, the pirates manage to close the bay doors before Laera can fly away. She surrenders herself to the traitorous pirates, allowing Kwan to escape with Kessler.
RIP Cobalt
Admiral Keyes is brought in by Ackerson to observe the bodies of the Spartan Cobalt Team, who were killed. Ackerson sent Cobalt Team out unprepared, leading to their demise. Keyes is furious until Ackerson reveals that there will be no evacuation of citizens. Ackerson discloses a plan to save crucial assets on Reach at the cost of innocent lives. Keyes refuses to be a part of that dark agenda and pledges to protect the people of Reach even if it means fighting and dying.
Boarding Pass
Kwan and Kessler sneak aboard a civilian transport to Reach. Kessler asks if he will see his mom again, and Kwan assures him that they will be reunited.
Worst Dinner Date
Master Chief meets his former commander Admiral Parangosky in a restaurant to share updated intel on the Covenant infiltration of Reach. Parangosky advises John not to go against ONI and to follow orders as a soldier. When John tries to leave, it is revealed that Parangosky is a loyal ONI agent, and the “restaurant” is filled with her team. Master Chief avoids a fight and walks away.
Savage Creation
Ackerson visits Dr. Catherine Halsey in her holographic prison cell to bid farewell. He analyzes why she suppressed the emotions of the Spartans, cultivating their loyalty to her. Ackerson assures Halsey that her work with the Spartan program will be used to do great things in the war. Halsey counters by revealing that she recognizes the red-headed girl they keep sending in to die as Ackerson’s dead sister, Julia. She explains that Julia was selected for the Spartan augmentation process but didn’t survive. Halsey delivers a deep, piercing dig by saying that she also fed Julia the line that she would be a small part of something greater and that she loved James.
