A new mainline Metro game is on the way.
The next mainline Metro game may still be a ways off. In 2010, 4A Games introduced a fresh survival horror FPS titled Metro 2033. The game proved to be a successful venture for publisher THQ, spawning several sequels due to its unique concept and appeal to fans of post-apocalyptic games while they awaited new Fallout releases. As the series evolved, each game improved in graphical quality, storytelling depth, and immersive gameplay. It has been five years since the last Metro game, and while another one has been confirmed, the release date remains unknown.
A new Metro prequel designed for VR headsets is set to release later this year, serving as more of a spin-off than a direct continuation of the series. This move seems aimed at keeping the IP relevant and engaging players while they await the next installment. The development team has shared a roadmap for the series’ future, stating that the next mainline Metro game will launch “when it’s ready.” Given the five-year gap already, the wait time could be extensive. It’s possible that the team is choosing to remain tight-lipped until a concrete release date is confirmed, meaning fans may not receive official news until closer to the launch.
Metro Exodus turns 5 years old today, and has now sold over 10 Million copies.

Regardless, it’s reassuring to receive an update on the next Metro game and confirm that the series will continue after a period of silence. It’s uncertain whether the new installment will carry on the existing storyline from the previous games or initiate a new trilogy with fresh characters and narratives. Either way, it’s evident that the team has been given ample time to ensure the game meets expectations.
