It seems Marvel wants readers to be fully aware of the Superior Spider-Man.
In the past year, the fan-favorite Spider-Man variant has been making headlines. First, Marvel brought him back for his own series. More recently, the publisher announced a new twist as the “Bloodhunt” story arc will see the debut of the Superior Spider-Boy in May’s Superior Spider-Man #7.
Why is Marvel cramming Superior Spider-Man into its comics? Let’s explore the possibilities.
IN CASE YOU FORGOT
If you recall, this particular Spider-Person was created by combining Doc Ock’s consciousness with Peter Parker’s body. Instead of an evil Spider-Man terrorizing the streets of New York City, Peter’s inherent goodness helped change the classic villain’s outlook. The result was an arrogant anti-hero utilizing elements of both Doctor Octopus and Spider-Man. He made his first cameo appearance in Daredevil #21 and his first full appearance in Avenging Spider-Man #15.1.
Between a fresh take on both characters and a cool new costume, the Superior Spider-Man was an instant hit. All good things must end, and Peter reclaimed his body and Spider-Man returned to normal. However, there was plenty of fan support to see more Superior Spider-Man. That demand could be the reason for his return to the comics, but there might be more at play.
INTO THE SPIDER-VERSE
Later this year, the Spider-Verse movie trilogy will come to its grand conclusion with Beyond the Spider-Verse. The hallmark of these films has been the seemingly infinite number of Spider-Man variants. Both comic and mainstream fans have been dazzled by Spider-People in all shapes, sizes, and species. For the final movie, Sony will need to bring something different to the table or risk underwhelming the audience. Superior Spider-Man could be exactly what Beyond needs, whether as a villain or an anti-hero. This is a Spider-Variant that has never been on screen before, and he already has a massive following.
Although he makes the most sense for Beyond the Spider-Verse, don’t count out the possibility of Superior Spider-Man appearing in the MCU. Doctor Octopus arrived in the Marvel Universe via No Way Home, so that piece of the puzzle is readily available. With both the Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire Spider-Men established in the MCU, who’s to say one of them won’t become the Superior Spider-Man. In fact, that could be a way to redeem “Bully Maguire” from Spider-Man 3.
Make no mistake, it’s no accident that Marvel is suddenly promoting the Superior Spider-Man. Now it’s a waiting game to see just why.
