Neil Druckmann’s tenure at Naughty Dog may be coming to a close.
Renowned director Neil Druckmann, known for his work on projects such as The Last of Us, The Last of Us Part II, and Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End at Naughty Dog, has suggested that he may be approaching the end of his career in creating AAA games. In recent years, Druckmann has been extremely busy, overseeing The Last of Us Part II, contributing to HBO’s The Last of Us TV series, and working on a new undisclosed project at Naughty Dog. With his plate full, Druckmann has now expressed his belief that his time working on such large-scale projects may be limited.
During an interview on the Logically Speaking podcast, Druckmann shared that each subsequent project at Naughty Dog since Uncharted 2: Among Thieves has brought increased pressure and stress due to larger development teams. He admitted that the process has taken a toll on him and he doesn’t foresee himself continuing to work on major video game projects of this magnitude in the long term. Instead, Druckmann expressed a desire to focus on smaller creative endeavors.
“I don’t see myself doing this forever at this scale. It’s a lot, and it’s draining. Managing that many people and multiple studios worldwide is very stressful,” Druckmann remarked. “I’m at a point in my life where I’m considering, ‘What’s the end game here? When is it time to step back?’ […] I’ve been thinking about how many more of these games I have left in me, and it’s not many.”
Druckmann also mentioned in the podcast that working on projects outside of creating AAA video games has been revitalizing for him in recent years. He cited HBO’s The Last of Us TV series and the Last of Us-themed Halloween Horror Nights experience at Universal Studios as examples of endeavors that have been fulfilling for him. Additionally, as his children have grown older, Druckmann has come to appreciate the value of his time.
Regarding his next game, Druckmann and the team at Naughty Dog have not officially announced their upcoming project. However, earlier this year, it was revealed that the concept for The Last of Us Part III has been explored, indicating that this may be the studio’s next focus. More details on this front may be disclosed before the end of 2024.
