Is The Spectacular Spider-Men #1 Good?
The Spectacular Spider-Men #1 is perfectly fine. Greg Weisman took on the task of creating a team-up book for Spider-Man and Miles Morales to hang out like normal people, up to the point where trouble comes along. In large part, this issue is all about the chemistry between the leads when a mystery presents itself, so mission accomplished.
Weisman’s script centers on Peter Parker and Miles Morales agreeing to get together weekly at the ESU coffee shop to check in, catch up, and stay connected on a personal level. After a few months of finessing coffee orders, bumping into old acquaintances, and chit-chatting about the future, ESU is suddenly besieged by a Hulk-sized version of the Jackal rampaging through campus. Between quips, brawling, (and an out-of-nowhere romance scene between a lesbian couple in Venice), the Spider-Men subdue the monster and learn about a hidden lab in ESU’s research department where the monster’s escape left an unidentified person dead.
In short, this issue is a healthy dose of Spider-Men action mixed with equal parts slice-of-life niceties and a dash of scenes that come out of nowhere for no apparent reason. It’s Marvel, so the latter is to be expected.
What’s great about The Spectacular Spider-Men #1? Good web-slinging action, solid chemistry between the leads, mildly amusing humor, and generally great art. Overall, this issue is better than the current Amazing Spider-Man title.
What’s not so great about The Spectacular Spider-Men #1? The mixture of action, slice-of-life, and out-of-nowhere oddities don’t quite gel, affecting the pacing the most. In other words, the pacing feels like sporadic spats of fast and slow, so you don’t get a consistently energetic reading experience. For example, there’s a running joke about Peter wanting to become a recognized regular at the coffee shop that takes much too long to set up and doesn’t satisfy the payoff. Then, we’re immediately back into the action.
How’s the art? Ramos’s art style and execution are (again) Superior to ASM (no pun intended). The action hits hard, the mundane scenes are light, and the overall visual look is appealing.

Bits and Pieces
The Spectacular Spider-Men #1 (mostly) accomplishes what it sets out to do by pairing Peter Parker and Miles Morales together as civilian friends and costumed superheroes. The character work is outstanding, and Ramos’s artwork is spot-on, but the pacing takes a severe hit with unrelated scenes and ping-pong shifts between “Then” and “Now.”
