Green Arrow #11 concludes Ollie’s mission to retrieve the Sanctuary records for Amanda Waller, leading to an unexpected encounter in the future with his longtime adversary. Is Green Arrow #11 Good?
If this is the second-to-last issue of Joshua Williamson’s run, could Malcolm Merlyn have been the primary antagonist all along? As the arc nears its end, it remains uncertain whether Williamson has a satisfying conclusion planned or if his track record of underwhelming endings will persist.
Previously, Oliver “Ollie” Queen, also known as Green Arrow, embarked on a family reunion in the Great White North to secure the Sanctuary Mask from an abandoned League base. The issue culminated in a battle between Ollie, Roy Harper, and holographic versions of the Justice League, designed to protect the Sanctuary Mask.
Now, the entire Green Arrow family unites to combat the artificial Justice League and obtain the mask. Upon notifying Waller of his success, Ollie demands payment before relinquishing the mask, resulting in a confrontation with Malcolm Merlyn. Waller transports Ollie to the future, where Merlyn has been waiting for years since escaping a time vortex.
Prior to their showdown, a flashback provides insight into the history of Ollie and Merlyn’s tumultuous relationship. Following the flashback, it is revealed that Merlyn used his time in the future to gather intelligence on everyone using the Sanctuary Mask, unleashing an army of holographic Arrow family members to confront the Emerald Archer.
What makes Green Arrow #11 stand out? The Sanctuary Mask proves to be a dangerous plot device in the wrong hands. By trapping Merlyn in the future for an extended period, the villain has ample time to strategize and prepare to inflict harm on Ollie, creating a compelling narrative.
What falls short in Green Arrow #11? The execution of Amanda Waller’s involvement and decisions is lacking. The rationale behind Waller’s elaborate scheme to acquire the Sanctuary Mask, only to transport Ollie to the future while he possesses it, raises questions. Additionally, Waller’s interaction with Merlyn seems unnecessarily complex and illogical. The more details are examined, the less coherent Waller’s role becomes.
How is the Artwork? Despite concerns about multiple artists contributing to a single issue, the varied artistic styles complement the storytelling effectively. Hester’s nostalgic approach suits the flashback sequences, while Izaakse’s dynamic action scenes enhance the present-day events.
