Chris Braly: Welcome to Indie Comics Showcase, Zack! What’s the pitch for Vampwyre?
Zack Lynch: Imagine if your phone could create a copy of you. Vampwyre tells the story of the first walking, talking AI being. It’s not just the beginning of Vampwyre’s tale, it’s also the start of the Blue Shack Universe. It’s a unique story with top-notch art.
CB: Where did the idea for Vampwyre come from, and who is the target audience?
ZL: I came up with the idea back in 1994 after working at Defiant and Tekno Comics. The target audience is readers aged 10 to 100. I run Blue Shack Comics with the same standards as the old comics code, making it suitable for both young and seasoned comic readers. The story is rich and complex, appealing to a wide range of readers.
CB: Can you share a bit about your background in comics, Zack?
ZL: My style is inspired by Jim Shooter’s, whom I interned for at Marvel. I immersed myself in Marvel comics from 1978 to 1988. After my comic book days, I spent 30 years in graphic design, photography, videography, and publishing. Now, returning to comics, I bring a wealth of experience and skills to the table.
CB: Who’s on your creative team for Vampwyre?
ZL: Mark McKenna and I met at a convention, and he loved the story. He assembled a team that includes David Lapham and Kim Vincent Harris, among others. We have around 20 people working on our books this year. We have plans for more titles in the future, with one Blue Shack Comic per month in the pipeline.
CB: How do you differentiate between indie publishing and crowdfunding in your process?
ZL: Crowdfunding relies heavily on social media presence and network size, often overshadowing quality. Many indie projects today focus more on the creator than the comic itself or the readers. At Blue Shack Comics, we prioritize the story and the readers above all else.
CB: What other projects do you have in the works, Zack?
ZL: We have plans to complete the first arc of Vampwyre with issues 5 and 6. Additionally, Vermyn 1 and 2, Oncoar the Finisher, and Chronolarpers are all set to be released this year. The future looks bright for Blue Shack Comics with a steady stream of new
