Tiny Garden is further evidence of the demand for cozy games that don’t consume all of one’s time.
The success of Tiny Glade, the small indie game focused on drawing castles, during Steam Next Fest, where it reached one million Wishlists, hinted at this trend. Now, with the Kickstarter campaign for Tiny Garden, it’s clear that people have a strong affinity for cozy games, especially those of a smaller scale.
Essentially, Tiny Garden is a compact farming and gardening simulation set inside a miniature capsule reminiscent of Polly Pocket toys from the ’90s. In this unique world, plastic is fertile enough to grow plants from plastic seeds by turning a plastic crank. Players begin with basic crops like carrots and turnips, but as these crops mature, they can be exchanged for more “luxurious” vegetables, plants, and furniture to decorate their tiny garden. Additionally, there is a tiny home in the top half of the capsule that can be furnished with a bed, nightstand, fireplace, and other decorations to create a cozy atmosphere.
The game lacks RPG elements, mini-games, puzzles, combat, or any potential for failure, and this simplicity is part of its appeal. The developers at Spain-based studio Ao Norte initially set a modest Kickstarter goal of $5000, but the project has already exceeded $22,000 in less than a week since its launch.
As a result of the unexpected funding success, the developers are introducing new stretch goals and expanding the project’s scope. While some stretch goals are still undisclosed, it has been revealed that reaching €40,000 will unlock a free mode, with another feature called ‘free mode’ available at €80,000.
Tiny Garden is being developed for Nintendo Switch and PC, with plans to make it Steam Deck verified in the near future.
In the meantime, players can explore the best indie games available on the Switch.
