Diamond Select Toys doesn’t always hit a home run with their value-priced line of Marvel Gallery PVC statues (my mind is still boggled by that white-eyed Gambit from the start of 2024), but when they do good, they do great. Such is the case with today’s review of my newest entry in that line: the Marvel Gallery Silver Surfer statue is cosmically cruising into homes now, and is one of my favorite additions to the lineup in quite some time…
One of the biggest regrets of my Marvel collecting life is that I never got an undamaged Bowen Designs Chrome Silver Surfer museum statue (I’ve temporarily owned a couple, but they were imperfect).
I’ve never felt any other resin Silver Surfer statue has been on as high a level, so I’ve never owned one (though I was extremely close to biting on the Sideshow maquette not that long ago).
But I’m not quite as picky when it comes to affordable PVC statues, so DST had my attention when they first showed off this Silver Surfer Gallery piece last year. It ended up being priced a few bucks higher than their normal pieces because of the size, but ~$75 is still bargain pricing for a 10” tall by 10” wide statue in this day and age.
This Diamond Select Silver Surfer comes in their standard Marvel Gallery window box packaging, with large windows to show off the collectible inside on three sides and a little bio and credits on the back. The package isn’t flashy, but it gets the job done adequately without raising the MSRP.
The biggest stumbling block that Diamond Select Toys commonly hits is with regards to paint detailing. Fine paint deco just is not their thing. Luckily, that’s not even an issue in this instance, as Norrin Radd is fully monochromatic and doesn’t have any minute details for DST to chance missing.
In addition, the figure has cosmic energy effects both on Silver Surfer’s hands and as part of the base holding the surfboard aloft.
I believe Norrin Radd himself and his surfboard are just cast on shiny silver plastic, and it looks really, really nice in person. It’s not my personal favorite—chrome—but it also doesn’t carry the mega price-tag and massive risk of defects that chrome does. The silver here looks nice—I like it.
