Starting in 1999 and continuing into the early 2000s, Claudia Black became a beloved presence on television screens thanks to her roles on two iconic sci-fi shows.
First, she played Aeryn Sun on Farscape alongside Ben Browder for all four seasons of the series. Then, she joined the cast of Stargate SG-1 as Vala Mal Doran in the 8th season, a character that proved to be too popular to be just a one-time guest appearance.
From Farscape to Stargate SG-1: Claudia Black’s journey
Initially meant for only one episode, Black’s character Vala Mal Doran resonated so well with audiences and the chemistry with Michael Shanks’ Daniel Jackson was undeniable. This led to her returning for more recurring appearances in the 9th season of SG-1.
Black found playing Vala to be a refreshing change from her role as Aeryn on Farscape, noting the character’s vibrancy and comedic edge.
Despite her love for Farscape, Black embraced the opportunity to portray a different kind of space character on Stargate SG-1, bringing her own comedic flair to the role of Vala.
Her portrayal of Vala ultimately led to her becoming a regular cast member in the final season of SG-1 and reprising the character in two Stargate films.
Black’s transition from the dramatic Aeryn to the comedic Vala was both challenging and rewarding, as she brought a new dynamic to the show’s scenes.
