A fresh interpretation of the Dark Knight is presented in Scott Synder and Nick Dragotta’s highly anticipated Absolute Batman! Are you prepared? Absolutely!
The story begins with a young Bruce Wayne at the zoo, observing a bat exhibit sign. This leads to a voiceover of a man riding a motorcycle back to Gotham City, noting significant changes in the city. When he removes his helmet, it is revealed to be Alfred Pennyworth with a salt-and-pepper beard.
This version of Alfred is portrayed as a secret agent, reminiscent of an older James Bond, tasked with surveilling a gang known as the Party Animals. He is also instructed to interact with another individual monitoring the gang.
We then visit Croc’s Gym and encounter the new Bruce Wayne, a muscular figure resembling an NFL tight end. As he trains, he reflects on a past conversation with his father (now his teacher) during a school field trip, interrupted by gunshots.
Bruce interacts with Waylon Jones, also known as Killer Croc, who invites him to a poker game with other familiar faces like Eddie, Harvey, Oz, and Selina. Bruce declines and leaves in a hurry.
The narrative shifts to Black Mask discussing business with Mr. Maroni and Mr. Falcone, ending with a deadly demonstration of power. Meanwhile, Mayor Jim Gordon faces angry citizens at a town hall meeting disrupted by the Party Animals, where Alfred is present but instructed only to observe.
A confrontation ensues with Batman intervening, showcasing his unique fighting style and gadgets. Alfred observes Batman’s actions and eventually deduces his true identity as Bruce Wayne.
The story delves into Bruce’s backstory, revealing his upbringing and eventual transformation into Batman. The issue concludes with an intriguing epilogue featuring a mysterious figure known as Joker.
