Popular sandbox game Terraria is now celebrating its 13th anniversary, and with the upcoming release of the game’s sixth and final update, the developers are inviting players to “explore the first final update.”
In a recent State of the Game blog post, developer Re-Logic introduced a Steam beta branch as the “first final update.” Players with Terraria installed on Steam can access this update by going to the game properties, visiting the betas page, and opting in to version 1.1.2. This version of Terraria harks back to a time when “Hardmode was brand new and the mech bosses were the ultimate challenge,” according to the developers.
The concept of a “final update” for Terraria has been a long-standing joke between the community and the developers. The Journey’s End patch in 2020 was initially promoted as the game’s last major update, only for the upcoming 1.4.5 patch to be announced as the sixth final update. The developers have hinted that there may be even more final updates in the future, with the 2015 1.3 update initially intended to be the first final update.
Version 1.1.2 is not meant to be a true final update but rather a nod to the ongoing meme surrounding the concept. It appears to be part of a series of playful releases, including the April Fools’ joke Terraria: Undeluxe Edition, which offered a beta branch with version 1.0.6.1. This version captures the early Terraria experience while including essential bug fixes.
