After 25 years since its original release, Kanon, one of the most acclaimed visual novels ever created, has finally made its way to Steam with its first official English translation.
In Kanon, players step into the shoes of a high school boy who has returned to a town he visited seven years ago. He encounters five girls, each connected to one of the game’s main storylines, and the player’s choices determine which story they will follow to its conclusion. It is a charming slice-of-life romance that continues to be a beloved title in the dating sim genre.
Initially launched in 1999, Kanon was the debut game from Key, the visual novel studio that later produced the highly popular Clannad. Like many romance visual novels of its time, Kanon originally included explicit sexual content, but subsequent releases, including this one, have removed that content to create an all-ages story. The game was a significant success in Japan, leading to light novels, manga adaptations, and two anime series.
In addition to the official English translation, the new Steam version of Kanon features voice acting for the first time on PC, as well as upgraded UI and visuals for a high-definition experience. While the game defaults to widescreen, some original 4:3 art may be cropped, although Steam reviews indicate that players can still view the full art with a simple button press.
In 2024, Kanon remains a niche title, making its release on Steam this month particularly exciting. With a notable legacy in a distinctive genre, it is wonderful to see the game reaching a new audience.
