Anthony Carrigan is returning to the worlds of DC to play Metamorpho in the upcoming Superman: Legacy, and he’s sharing some thoughts about how he connects to the character.
Carrigan is familiar to DC fans having played Victor Zsasz on the Fox series Gotham. Following his time with that series, he went on to play another villain in the recently ended Barry, and now he is finally going to get to play a hero.
Speaking with Rolling Stone recently, Carrigan said of the role, “It’s very refreshing to be playing a superhero, finally, but I don’t think it quite matters to me.” He elaborated by saying, “My favorite game is to, no matter what I’m given, try to find the opposites. See what’s possible in terms of stretching a character in different directions. With all of my characters, I really try to find some sense of authenticity and truth on what I can relate to about the character. With Metamorpho, this is a character who was almost cursed with his powers and thought that he was freakish in terms of what he looked like and that’s something I could totally relate to because of my alopecia.”
Expanding on his experience with the condition, he said, “Alopecia is an interesting experience to go through because it more than anything rocks your world when it comes to your identity. You go from someone who moves throughout the world in a way that everyone looks at you and you are who you are, and then all of a sudden, things start to change on your head and on your face. People stop looking at you and they start looking at your condition, and that is a really alienating, very dehumanizing thing. Villains don’t really accept themselves all that much. Superheroes tend to. There’s this concept of acknowledging one’s journey and leading with love as opposed to bitterness and wishing that you could change.”
It sounds as though he could be bringing a lot of real life experience to a character such as this.
Metamorpho made his debut in 1965 in The Brave and the Bold #57. Rex Mason was a soldier of fortune who was exposed to the rays of a meteor inside an Egyptian pyramid. It transformed him into a being who could transform into any element found in the human body.
The cast is set to include David Corenswet as Superman, and Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane. They will all be joined by Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific, Carrigan as Metamorpho, Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner, Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, Sara Sampaio as Eve Teschmacher, and María Gabriela de Faría as the Engineer.
With filming slated to begin in March, and numerous other roles to still be announced, there are sure to be more announcements in the coming weeks.
Superman: Legacy will hit theaters on July 11, 2025.
