The director of The Crow, Rupert Sanders, revealed that Bill Skarsgård fully committed to the role of Eric Draven.
Sanders shared, “After 40 days of night shoots, there was this big tank of black oil, and I said, ‘Bill, you wouldn’t like to get in there and thrash around naked for us, would you?'” in an interview with Total Film. “And he was like, ‘Sure!’ and jumped straight in.”
These scenes are part of the title sequence and have been teased in the trailers released so far. It seems that the oil will play a significant role in Eric Draven’s makeup, rather than being crudely applied with paint after climbing out of his grave in a fit of rage and panic, as seen in the original film.
The sequels to the main film also feature unique makeup designs, with The Crow: Wicked Prayer’s Alex Corvus sporting dark eyes and a painted smile after a botched execution by electric chair.
The Crow, starring Skarsgård as the lead, is a reimagining of the graphic novel by James O’Barr. The official synopsis from Lionsgate reads: “Soulmates Eric Draven and Shelly Webster are brutally murdered. Given the chance to save his true love by sacrificing himself, Eric sets out to seek revenge, traversing the worlds of the living and the dead to put things right.”
The Crow is set to premiere on August 23, 2024, after being pushed back from its original release date of June 7. More details can be found in the upcoming issue of Total Film, hitting shelves and digital newsstands on Thursday, July 19.
