A Blue Beetle animated series is in the works at DC Studios with creatives from the film involved in its development.
According to a report from Deadline, Warner Bros. Animation and DC Studios are working on an upcoming Blue Beetle series that would continue the storylines established in the film.
Miguel Puga (The Casagrandes) reportedly started working on the series as showrunner earlier this year. Angel Manuel Soto who directed the film, and Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer who wrote the screenplay, or both attached as executive producers along with John Rikard. Galen Vaisman served as an EP on the film and will oversee the animated series.
According to sources, contact has been made with the film’s cast about returning to voice their characters. While no one has signed on as of yet, the reactions are said to have been positive.
The Blue Beetle movie hit theaters on Aug. 18, 2023, and was generally well-received, but failed to make a large impact on the box office. DC Studios co-chair James Gunn has expressed a desire to see Xolo Maridueña continue in the role of Jaime Reyes, but how that would be accomplished has not been shared up until now. Should he sign on to the animated series, we would have our answer.
No word as of yet on a potential production timeline for the series.
