The Watchers, Ishana Night Shyamalan’s debut feature (known as The Watched in the UK), is set to hit theaters soon. Dakota Fanning, who portrays protagonist Mina, reveals that the film showcases elements she has never encountered in a movie before.
Based on A.M. Shine’s novel and visually influenced by The Witch and Antichrist, The Watchers follows Mina as she becomes stranded in a dense Irish forest. Within this unusual woodland lies a mysterious cabin where other stranded individuals are imprisoned. Each night, they must allow themselves to be observed by enigmatic creatures. By adhering to the rules and refraining from attempting to escape, there is a glimmer of hope for their survival.
“I appreciate the fact that it is an Irish fairytale, deeply rooted in folklore and mythology,” Fanning comments on the film. The Ripley actress further explains that Ireland holds a sense of familiarity for her, and she was delighted to return there for filming. “I had previously worked in Dublin, so I was excited to go back – I have many friends there.”
Regarding her attraction to the character of Mina, who may have a complex past – no spoilers! – Fanning enjoyed merging the grounded narrative with the supernatural aspects of the film.
“I am fascinated by the blend of genuine human experiences with the unreal, surreal elements, how they intertwine,” she elaborates. “I found it incredibly intriguing and unlike anything I had seen before.”
In addition to her role in The Watchers, Fanning has recently completed filming for another horror film, Vicious. Directed and written by Brian Bertino of The Strangers, the movie is slated for release in the US on 8 August 2025.
The Watchers will premiere in theaters on 7 June. For more information, be sure to explore our guides on upcoming horror films and our recommendations for the best horror movies of all time.
