Is Exceptional X-Men #1 Good?
Let’s address the elephant in the room – this is not the worst X-title from Tom Brevoort’s From the Ashes era (that dubious honor still goes to NYX). While Exceptional X-Men #1 by Eve L. Ewing is not a terrible comic, it does lean towards a slow and melancholic tone, shedding light on Kitty Pryde’s struggles in Chicago post-Krakoa with hints of things to come.
Exceptional X-Men #1 opens with a glimpse into Kitty Pryde’s daily life in Chicago as she tries to keep a low profile and blend in with humans. Living with her roommate Priti and working at Lulu’s Tavern, Kitty’s routine is disrupted when she encounters a mutant girl in distress.
Eve L. Ewing skillfully sets the stage for Kitty’s struggles without overwhelming the reader with exposition. While the narrative delves into Kitty’s sense of loss and aimlessness, it falls short in providing a compelling reason for her current predicament.
Throughout the issue, Kitty’s melancholy dominates the narrative, painting a picture of a character struggling to find purpose and redemption. However, the execution of Kitty’s emotional turmoil feels contrived at times, especially when revisiting her past actions as a “forced” killer.
As Kitty’s night takes an unexpected turn at a concert, the narrative introduces a new mutant character, Trista, whose actions escalate into a confrontation. However, the portrayal of Trista’s behavior and Kitty’s intervention lack depth and fail to engage readers effectively.
Despite its emotional depth, Exceptional X-Men #1 struggles to offer a compelling storyline or direction for the series. The lack of impactful moments and slow pacing hinder the issue from establishing a strong foundation for future developments.
Final Thoughts
