Game of the Year is a highly sought-after title that is awarded every December. Whether it is given at The Game Awards, by individual outlets, or in conversations among gamers, the debate over GOTY is always intense. The prestigious award is open to all games, regardless of genre, studio, or budget. The only requirement is that it must be released in that particular year and be beloved for any reason.
In previous years, CGMagazine has awarded Game of the Year to games of various kinds. Elden Ring won GOTY 2022 after our readers helped make the final decision. Resident Evil Village took home the title for GOTY 2021, facing tough competition from Halo Infinite and Forza Horizon 5. Hades, an indie roguelike game, won GOTY 2020, proving that AAA studios don’t always have to win.
The race for Game of the Year 2023 has been interesting. We compiled all the game reviews on CGMagazine that scored 8.5 out of 10 or higher and asked our 24 staff members to vote for their favorites. After narrowing down over 60 games to our top ten, we faced a 5-way tie for the last two spots. The votes were between Hi-Fi Rush, Metroid Prime Remastered, Resident Evil 4 Remake, Star Ocean: The Second Story R, and Super Mario Bros. Wonder. With a revote, CGMagazine finally had its top ten nominees for Game of the Year. Super Mario Bros. Wonder was one of the nominees.
The nominees for CGMagazine’s Game of the Year 2023 represented a wide range of genres and ESRB ratings, proving that family-rated games still have a place in modern gaming. Games like Super Mario RPG and Super Mario Bros. Wonder were popular among families in 2023. We also covered horror games like Alan Wake 2, Dead Space Remake, and Resident Evil 4 Remake. RPGs like Baldur’s Gate 3 and Super Mario RPG found their place as well. Action and action-adventure titles like Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, Final Fantasy XVI, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, and Star Wars Jedi: Survivor remained as popular as ever.
However, only one game could be crowned the winner. CGM’s team voted for their top three games of the year to determine the ultimate Game of the Year 2023. Star Wars Jedi: Survivor and Alan Wake 2 tied for third place, leaving the top spot open. Without further delay, here are the results:
CGMagazine’s Game of the Year 2023 Runner-Up: Final Fantasy XVI
Final Fantasy XVI represents a return to form for a franchise that has had some ups and downs in recent years. It takes a bold step into the action-RPG genre while incorporating familiar themes from the series. The game’s epic tale of war, sacrifice, revenge, and freedom captivated us. The performance of protagonist Clive Rosfield by Ben Starr left a lasting impression, ranking among the series’ most beloved heroes. The set-piece boss battles and the powerful score from composer Masayoshi Soken added to the intensity and emotion of the game.
Game of the Year 2023: Baldur’s Gate 3
Baldur’s Gate 3 is a game that comes around once in a decade. It goes beyond being a great RPG and becomes an experience that will shape the genre for years to come. The game offers players freedom in crafting their characters and stories, as well as in approaching every situation and obstacle. The world of Faerûn reacts to every choice, with consequences that last throughout the 100-hour gameplay. The well-written characters and party members, along with the exceptional co-op multiplayer, make Baldur’s Gate 3 stand out. The sheer scale and ambition of the game, coupled with its success on all fronts, solidify its position as CGMagazine’s Game of the Year 2023.
