A new Lord of the Rings movie, The Hunt for Gollum, is in development. Andy Serkis will be reprising his role as Gollum and directing the film. It is uncertain if other beloved characters from Middle-earth will make an appearance.
Sir Ian McKellen mentioned in an interview with The Times that he has heard Gandalf might be in The Hunt for Gollum, but there is no script or confirmed plans yet. When asked if he would be interested in returning as Gandalf, McKellen humorously replied, “If I’m alive.”
McKellen has played Gandalf in Peter Jackson’s original Lord of the Rings trilogy as well as The Hobbit trilogy.
Producer and director Peter Jackson, along with writers Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens, expressed their excitement for working with Andy Serkis again on The Hunt for Gollum. Viggo Mortensen, who portrayed Aragorn, mentioned he would consider returning to the role if it fits the character.
The Hunt for Gollum is currently in the early stages of development and will be the first of several new projects. Another animated film, The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim, is set to release in December.
Meanwhile, The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power season 2 will premiere on Prime Video on August 29. Stay updated on the latest upcoming movies for 2024.
