Gears of War: E-Day spans more than just a single day, according to Gears creative director Matt Searcy.
During a group interview at Summer Game Fest 2024 with GamesRadar+, Searcy disclosed that the prequel focuses on the Locust Horde invasion but also includes setup and aftermath, extending the timeline beyond a 24-hour period.
“It’s not a day, it’s multiple days,” Searcy explained. “But it is about the event, like it’s about sticking with these characters from the moment, you know, setting up the moment it happens, and being with them every minute, through the days that play out of the city and really experiencing it through their eyes, both what’s happening to them, and also what’s happening to the city around them, the people around them, the other characters.”
If you missed the announcement during the Xbox Showcase at SGF, The Coalition unveiled that the next mainline game in the Gears of War series is a prequel set 14 years before the original game. It will delve into the Emergence Day event, when the Locust Horde emerged from their underground civilization and invaded the planet of Sera, leading to the Locust War that shapes the series’ storyline.
While Gears of War: E-Day may follow a Black Hawk Down approach and unfold over 24 hours, it will also explore the events leading up to the invasion and battle.
Searcy also mentioned that Gears of War: E-Day will feature more linear levels compared to Gears 5’s open-ended maps.
