Get Fury #1 takes a trip back in time to 1971 Vietnam for an off-the-books mission that sends Captain Frank Castle into the jungle to kill a kidnapped Nick Fury before Fury’s captors torture him to divulge sensitive intel.
Is Get Fury #1 Good?
Holy @##^&! Garth Ennis goes in hard to his ode to ‘Nam comics in Get Fury #1. Make no mistake, this is a rated-R comic from start to finish, with mature themes, coarse language, and gory violence. Think Platoon with Marvel characters, and you’re in the right ballpark.
Ennis’s story centers on Frank Castle as a soldier in 1971 Vietnam with a reputation for getting ugly assignments done. This time, he’s given the task of finding and killing a captured Nick Fury before Fury can divulge military secrets to his captors under torture.
Elsewhere, we follow Nick Fury and two of his men as they’re dragged through the jungle to an unknown destination by Khmer Rouge and NVA forces. When one of his men falls due to prior injuries, their captors choose to bury him alive. When the second soldier chooses to speak up rather than bide his time, he’s hacked to pieces in gory detail by their machete-wielding captors.
What’s great about Get Fury #1? This is a true blue, rough war story from start to finish without a cape or cowl in sight. Ennis pulls no punches, so readers hankering for a war comic without the polish of Disney-fication, this is it.
What’s not so great about Get Fury #1? Nothing beyond minor nitpicks. Ennis wants to tell an ugly war story, and he nails it with familiar characters who do what they must in a time of war.
How’s the art? Burrows and Ortego are responsible for making this comic feel as gritty, rough, and ugly as the script calls for, and they succeed mightily. The final death scene is gruesome enough to unsettle, so squeamish readers may want to consider if they can stomach it.

Bits and Pieces
Get Fury #1 is a barebones, gritty, ugly, gruesome war comic that weaves a tale about two famous Marvel characters intersecting on the field of battle. Ennis delivers a comic that chooses to show war as ugly as it truly is without the glamour or glory, and the art team brings the violence to vivid life.
