Ghost of Tsushima, the open-world samurai adventure that was originally released in 2020 as a PlayStation 4 exclusive, has achieved the highest player count for a single-player launch on PC for the publisher.
Recently, Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut was released on the digital platform Steam, bringing with it the original game’s gripping campaign, exclusive armor sets, developer commentary, and the co-op mode Legends in the Director’s Cut edition.
PlayStation’s expansion to multiple platforms seems to be gaining momentum, as Ghost of Tsushima has surpassed the popularity of games featuring well-known characters like Kratos and Peter Parker. The PC version of Ghost of Tsushima has reached a concurrent player count of 75,000, according to SteamDB charts.
Following closely behind is God of War (2018) with a peak of 73,000 concurrent players, Marvel’s Spider-Man (2018) with 66,000, and the Horizon series with peaks of 56,000 and 40,000 for Horizon: Zero Dawn and Horizon: Forbidden West, respectively.
The only PlayStation-published game with a higher peak player count is Helldivers 2, a multiplayer phenomenon with a peak of 458,000. However, it had the advantage of launching on the storefront on its release day, unlike Ghost of Tsushima which was ported later on.
Ghost of Tsushima faced a similar controversy to Helldivers 2 related to PSN requirements, as Sony Interactive Entertainment initially required PC players to link to an active PlayStation Network account. This led to a backlash and the game being delisted in some countries. Sony eventually removed the requirement for Helldivers 2, but it still remains for Ghost of Tsushima’s online co-op mode.
Players of Ghost of Tsushima on PC have praised Sony’s port, especially after issues with previous ports like The Last of Us, with one player describing it as “perfect the moment you open it.”
