After nearly a year of introducing its ‘Energon Universe’ featuring shared GI Joe and Transformers titles, Skybound Entertainment has officially revealed the launch of its ongoing GI Joe series.
Penned by Joshua Williamson, known for his work on several GI Joe limited series that set the stage for the new ongoing title, GI Joe will be illustrated by Tom Reilly with colors by Jordie Bellaire, the same art team from Williamson’s Duke limited series.
Skybound assures fans that its GI Joe series will offer a “bold new vision of GI Joe and Cobra,” continuing the story from where the Duke and Cobra Commander series left off, with both leaders forming new versions of their respective organizations.
“Conrad Hauser, Codename DUKE, has formed a special force called GI Joe to combat the growing power of the mysterious COBRA after the Autobots and Decepticons arrive on Earth. But the enigmatic Cobra Commander has unleashed Energon power like never before!” states Skybound’s official description of the new GI Joe series.
“Introducing the First Appearance of a brand new character and many familiar faces, this comic will challenge everything you know about GI Joe…and that’s just the beginning of the surprises!”
Recently departing from two DC titles, Green Arrow and Batman & Robin, Williamson mentioned his desire to prevent burnout as he takes on new projects, including the launch of GI Joe.
“The team is finally assembled! The response to the mini-series leading up to this moment has been incredible, seeing lifelong fans and new readers come together to support GI Joe in the Energon Universe,” Williamson says in a statement accompanying the announcement.
“What we’ve seen so far was just a glimpse into the vast world of action and drama that awaits in the new ongoing series. It’s time to ramp up the story as GI Joe and Cobra collide for the first time!” he continues. “Our first issue will shake up the Energon Universe with significant moments we’ve been eager to share. Tom and Jordie are delivering top-notch work on every page. Don’t miss out on GI Joe #1. Yo Joe!”
While Skybound launches a fresh GI Joe title with a new team, the classic GI Joe comic book continuity continues in GI Joe: A Real American Hero, written by Larry Hama and illustrated by Tony Kordos.
“I love it when a plan comes together. With the groundwork set, Skybound is ready to expand the Energon Universe with an ongoing GI Joe series,” states Skybound founder Robert Kirkman. “Duke, Cobra Commander, Scarlett and Destro have only scratched the surface of what’s to come. Now Josh, Tom, and the team are presenting a new perspective on these beloved characters that will stand alongside Transformers and Void Rivals as pillars of the Energon Universe!”
GI Joe #1 hits shelves on November 13, featuring a wraparound cover by interior artists Tom Reilly and Jordie Bellaire, as shown above.
