The developer of Helldivers 2 has rejected the idea of introducing a PvP mode.
Don’t expect to engage in player versus player combat in Helldivers 2 (except for accidental occurrences). Helldivers 2 has already become one of the biggest games of 2024, setting records for PlayStation with its PC release and attracting a large player base. The game has been featured multiple times in PlayStation’s State of Plays and other related events, but it didn’t seem to generate significant hype from these showings. It appeared to be a game that would come and go without igniting social media with excitement upon release. However, it has been immensely successful so far, resulting in major server issues due to the high number of players. Many players are providing feedback on how to improve the game or suggesting features they would like to see in the future, but Arrowhead Game Studios is pushing back on some of these ideas.
One player suggested that Helldivers 2 should incorporate a PvP mode in the future, but the CEO of Arrowhead, Johan Pilestedt, quickly dismissed the idea, as they aim to minimize toxic elements within the community and foster a supportive environment that brings people together. Currently, Helldivers 2 only allows players to team up in squads of four to combat bugs and robots. Players can accidentally kill their friends due to friendly fire, but the game does not actively encourage fighting against friends. The entire game revolves around the concept of players working together towards a common goal and spreading democracy across the galaxy. Introducing a competitive PvP mode would likely contradict many of the larger themes and philosophies of Helldivers 2.
Hey; We’ll “never” add a PvP-mode. This is to reduce toxic elements from the community.
We want an environment that’s supportive, fun and where we all are fighting on the same side!

Of course, things could always change, but it doesn’t seem like Helldivers 2 was designed as a PvP shooter. The core game offers plenty of enjoyment, and it appears that Arrowhead will continue to expand on the game over time, introducing more content that enhances the cooperative gameplay experience.
