Peacock’s new Satanic Panic series, Hysteria! (all eight episodes drop October 18), is set in the late 1980s but serves as a commentary on the current issues affecting our society.
In a discussion with USA Insider via Zoom, co-creator, showrunner, and executive producer Matthew Scott Kane shared that he was inspired to create the project in 2019 when terms like “fake news” were on the rise. He noticed similarities between the ’80s panic surrounding Satanic cults and modern society’s tendency to jump to wild conclusions.
The Origins of Peacock’s Hysteria Series
Kane, who gained experience working on American Horror Story and It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, saw a connection between the distorted reality of the ’80s and the current state of society. He wanted to explore the blurred lines between facts and perceptions, leading to a show where realities are twisted.
Co-creator and executive producer David A. Goodman, known for his work on Family Guy and Futurama, was drawn to the project due to its compelling pilot script. The series focuses on a teenage heavy metal band making poor choices in response to the town’s fear of the occult.
Why the ’80s Are Popular in Hollywood
Many recent TV shows and movies have embraced the ’80s era, tapping into the nostalgia of a time when people shared common cultural touchpoints. This period, free from smartphones and social media, allowed for more present-moment living and a sense of unity.
The cast members of Hysteria! also highlighted the rebellious spirit and unique fashion of the ’80s that continues to resonate with audiences today.
How to Watch Hysteria!
All episodes of Hysteria! will premiere on Peacock on October 18, with weekly airings on USA Network. The series is directed by Jordan Vogt-Roberts and features a talented team of executive producers.
