Avowed has been confirmed as a strictly single-player RPG, with creative director Carrie Patel explaining the reasoning behind this decision in a recent interview.
In a conversation with Windows Central, Patel commended RPGs that are able to integrate multiplayer mechanics without compromising the single-player experience. While Avowed was initially considered to have a multiplayer component, this idea was ultimately abandoned to allow Obsidian to focus on creating a compelling single-player RPG. In the interview, Patel provides further insight into the decision to prioritize single-player, referencing Baldur’s Gate 3.
Patel explains that developing a robust multiplayer experience alongside delivering a brand new Obsidian RPG was too challenging for the studio. She emphasizes the importance of a strong campaign, critical story path, and player agency in shaping the game world, which becomes more complex with the addition of multiplayer features.
While acknowledging the success of multiplayer modes in games like Baldur’s Gate 3, Patel highlights Obsidian’s commitment to delivering a well-developed story, meaningful choices, and player impact in Avowed.
Many players, like myself, appreciate Obsidian’s decision to focus on single-player, as multiplayer additions to single-player games can sometimes feel forced or unnecessary. By concentrating on single-player, Obsidian can stay true to its strengths and deliver a compelling RPG experience in Avowed.
