Over the last few years, the Warner Bros/DC relationship has failed to get on the same page in terms of its universe of film and television projects. Now, after a pretty rocky year filled with highs and lows, it appears the course is being corrected. As first reported by The Hollywood Reporter, James Gunn and producer Peter Safran will officially lead DC’s film, TV, and animation efforts as co-chairs and co-CEOs of DC Studios, a newly formed division at Warner Bros.
The move is absolutely monumental in terms of creating a singular vision for the onslaught of DC intellectual property owned by Warner Bros. It is also notable given the act that Gunn will largely go from a mostly creative player for DC and move into an executive role going forward. However, per the initial report, Gunn and Safran will not sacrifice their creative endeavors with the move and continue to continue to direct and produce projects. Additionally, the deal will be for four years.

The move comes just days after the departure of Walter Hamada, who served as the President of DC Films for the last several years. Gunn and Safran will now report directly to Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav and work closely with Warner’s film co-chairs Michael De Luca and Pamela Abdy.
In a joint statement, Gunn and Safran promise big things in store for the future of DC.
“We’re honored to be the stewards of these DC characters we’ve loved since we were children,” said Gunn and Safran. “We look forward to collaborating with the most talented writers, directors, and actors in the world to create an integrated, multilayered universe that still allows for the individual expression of the artists involved. Our commitment to Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Harley Quinn, and the rest of the DC stable of characters is only equaled by our commitment to the wonder of human possibility these characters represent. We’re excited to invigorate the theatrical experience around the world as we tell some of the biggest, most beautiful, and grandest stories ever told. We’re especially enthusiastic about doing all of this with Mike, Pam, Casey, Channing, and the whole Warner Bros. Discovery team, and are grateful to David Zaslav, whose bold vision for the future of the franchise we share and allows for this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Most of all, we can’t wait to bring you all into the story of the DCU.”
DC continues to make waves in 2022. Following the release of the John Cena starring series Peacemaker, films Dwayne Johnson’s DC’s League of SuperPets and Black Adam found success at the box office. Notably, actors Henry Cavill and Ben Affleck have been brought in to reprise their roles as Superman and Batman as well.
