Released in 1995, Justice League Task Force was a fighting game developed for both the SNES and Sega Genesis/Mega Drive. Capitalizing on the popularity of games like Street Fighter II and Mortal Kombat, players took control of heroes and villains from the DC Universe and pit them in one-on-one bouts against one another. For the first time, friends could determine who would win in a fight between Superman and Batman.
Yesterday, Todd McFarlane’s company McFarlane Toys, who produces the DC Multiverse line of action figures and collectibles, revealed that they were bringing Justice League Task Force back in action figure form. Four figures are includes in the forthcoming line: Batman, Superman, Flash and Aquaman, and if you collect them all, you can assemble Darkseid with build-a-figure parts. Pre-orders for the figures are expected to start today at various retailers.

An oft forgotten brawler from a bygone age, Justice League Task Force holds more historical significance than you think. The SNES version was built by a studio who would later become known as Blizzard Entertainment, who needs no introduction, while another was commissioned for Sega’s console by a developer named Condor, Inc. under the leadership of one David Brevik. Both operated under the assumption that their version was the only one until they arrived at a consumers electronics tradeshow in 1994 to see each others work in action.
The chance encounter led to the 2 studios collaborating with one another, eventually leading to Brevik pitching a game to Blizzard that would come to be known to the world over as Diablo. For more details, check out this interview between David Brevik and Chris Baker.
