I triumphed over Hideo Kojima. Not in a physical altercation, as he is most likely on the other side of the world right now, and if I ever did encounter him, I wouldn’t immediately resort to violence. And not in a metaphorical sense, like conquering Death Stranding. I defeated Hideo Kojima, or rather his memeified persona, in a video game demo.
During Steam Next Fest, which brings numerous playable demos to the digital storefront, I came across Meme Mayhem, an idle roguelike where you combat internet trolls by throwing emojis at them in the social media battlegrounds.
After battling trolls for a while, I encountered various internet celebrities who acted as boss fights. Some were cute viral cats, the perpetually sad toad meme, or even a Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson lookalike named The Stone, who didn’t hesitate to taunt me on the in-game social media platform.
Then I faced Kideo, a bespectacled man with distinctive hair and a talent for brief movie reviews. He challenged me for unclear reasons, but his defeat supposedly inspired him for his next “great game story.”
Although Meme Mayhem’s concept and execution may not appeal to everyone, the opportunity to play as Gabe Newell while battling Hideo Kojima is too enticing to ignore. You can experience the Meme Mayhem demo on Steam now or wait to pit Kideo against Gaven, a Gabe Newell lookalike, in the full game releasing this July.
