“Wild and crazy” are certainly fitting descriptors for Psylocke’s journey in the final years of Chris Claremont’s iconic run on Uncanny X-Men. During this time, she experienced being reborn, having her mind wiped, undergoing an ethnic change, and even swapping souls. As a result, Betsy briefly took on the persona of Lady Mandarin, serving as the Mandarin’s assassin. In this role, she engaged in a battle with Wolverine, who was donning his infamous ninja attire. Ultimately, Logan emerged victorious, defeating Psylocke and restoring her free will. Now, thanks to Hasbro, fans have the opportunity to recreate this historic battle with the Marvel Legends Lady Mandarin Psylocke & Ninja Wolverine figures two-pack, which is currently available for order!
To be honest, I never had much of an interest in owning a Marvel Legends Ninja Wolverine figure, let alone two. However, given that Psylocke appears as Lady Mandarin in this twin-pack as part of the Wolverine 60th Anniversary Series, it’s only fitting that this particular version of Logan is included (especially since he wore this costume during his clash with Lady Mandarin). So, after five years since his single-carded release in the X-Men Vintage/Retro Series, Wolverine in his black ninja outfit returns as an updated figure within this prominent set.
While Hasbro previously released a solid figure of Wolverine in this costume back in 2019, this current iteration showcases significant improvements on the modern mold for Wolverine, featuring pin-less arms and legs. The figure also comes with an alternate scowling face and hands, with and without claws. These accessories are essential for capturing the essence of this specific version of the character. Admittedly, this might be the weakest individual selection in the entire 50th Anniversary Wolverine series, but it’s hard to envision representing this battle without including this variation of Logan.
On the other hand, Lady Psylocke proves to be a much more intriguing figure. Her armored body is complemented by a malevolent smiling head, hands adorned with the Mandarin’s ten rings, effect pieces for the rings, an alternate neutral head, and a psychic knife. Additionally, she features the modern double pin-less knees and elbows. The intricate armor design on this figure truly sets it apart from any previous Hasbro Psylocke action figure.
While this two-pack is incredibly story-specific, based on Uncanny X-Men issues 256-258 from 1989-1990, it celebrates a cover (if not a battle) that remains memorable even after three and a half decades. I appreciate the inclusion of the iconic classic covers on the box back, although reading these X-Men comics as a kid certainly makes me feel old.
I understand that many fans were hoping for the Outback Psylocke costume to be represented in toy form, but I’m confident that we will see that version of Betsy in the near future. For a Wolverine anniversary series, this pairing of figures is reasonable and makes sense. It’s an interesting offering that I’m excited to add to my collection this year.
