Hasbro has been taking the slow and steady approach throughout 2024, giving Marvel Legends collectors a few little treats each month, rather than hammering fans with wave after wave of figures as in past years. But speaking of past years, this week’s offerings are a blast from the past, bringing back two of the most popular ML of the last half decade: reissues of the X-Men Legends Professor X in Hoverchair and Spider-Man Legends Retro Green Goblin are now up for order!Pre-Order Links:Professor X in Hoverchair ►Retro Green Goblin ►
Sometimes in the action figure world, a hit is just a hit, and there’s not a whole lot of inspiration to reinvent the wheel right away. Such is the case with this week’s “new” Hasbro Marvel Legends offerings, which are both old favorites returning exactly as they were before.
First up is one of the most popular X-Men Marvel Legends action figures ever, the deluxe Riders Professor Charles Xavier in 90s suit with yellow Hoverchair. There’s no denying just how iconic 90s Professor X In Hoverchair has become, largely because of the massively popular Jim Lee X-Men comics and X-Men Animated Series. First released way back in 2019, Marvel Riders Professor X was always a hot ticket and prices began escalating for him as soon as retailers were sold out.
Ordinarily, Hasbro collectors balk at a $49.99 MSRP, but this is an instance where fans are a lot more forgiving, as the yellow Hoverchair itself is such a large and absolutely essential inclusion here. The chair has a large “hovering” air effect attached to the bottom, and a Cerebro helmet with psychic effects and extra Shadow King head (to stick on Kingpin bodies) help make this figure feel like a solid value despite the $50 MSRP.
I’d really like to see the base Professor Xavier here upgraded to be fully pin-less at some point, but that’s not as much of a priority for a guy who’s predominantly displayed in a chair with his legs concealed. Given the acclaim for X-Men 97, this is one of the best older releases Hasbro could have selected to reissue this year.
Meanwhile, Spidey’s greatest non-symbiote foe is making a comeback as well, in the form of the 2020 Retro Green Goblin figure! I just reviewed the Animated GreenGoblin and Mary Jane two-pack a few months ago and really liked that set, but it’s really nice to have a comic book-y Norman Osborn available again.
I thought this Green Goblin Legends retro figure was an excellent release back in 2020, and I still do today. The chain mail style body with the light green color tone looks both familiar and formidable, and the accessories spread is almost everything I’d hope for from a Green Goblin. While it’d be nice if a fist or two had been added for fisticuffs action, it’s hard to complain when a basic release is already coming with an unmasked Norman Osborn head, a Goblin Glider, a satchel and a very cool smoking pumpkin bomb. This is the best comics based Green Goblin 6” figure Hasbro has done, and it’s great to see it available and accessible for new fans and collectors who missed the initial release.
