It seems like Mewgenics is gearing up for a release in 2025.
The next game from Binding of Isaac developer Edmund McMillen, Mewgenics, has been in development on and off since 2012. Originally announced as a Team Meat project during McMillen’s time working on Super Meat Boy, the game was eventually canceled after a few years. However, McMillen regained the rights to the game and partnered with Tyler Glaiel to restart development in 2018. During this reboot, Mewgenics was transformed into a tactical role-playing roguelite with a projected release date of 2025. Recently, McMillen provided a substantial update on the game’s Steam page, detailing the current state of development and hinting at when more information on the release date may be revealed.
In the update, McMillen shared insights into the progress of Mewgenics. He mentioned that they are close to completing the monster roster, with only 15 enemies and 12 bosses left to finalize. Additionally, all cat abilities have already been completed. McMillen identified items, events, and SFX as the primary areas still requiring work, estimating their completion percentages for each. He expressed confidence in finishing all content by New Year’s, after which the focus will shift to polishing the game and building anticipation ahead of the launch. While challenges may arise during development, McMillen suggested that a release date announcement could come early next year, keeping the 2025 launch window within reach.
The blog post also delved into the mechanics of NPCs in Mewgenics. Initially resembling Animal Crossing’s system, players will now sell cats to NPCs for various upgrades. Each NPC has specific preferences for the types of cats they wish to purchase, adding strategic depth to cat creation in the game.
Although Mewgenics is slated for a 2025 release, a specific launch date has not been confirmed. Currently planned for PC, additional platforms may be considered in the future.
