Midnight Sons: Blood Hunt #1 gets the band back together when Tulip enlists the Midnight Sons to stop Blade from orchestrating the vampire apocalypse.
Is Midnight Sons: Blood Hunt #1 Good?
Okay, this is fine. Bryan Hill gets reacquainted with the Midnight Sons in a premier issue that’s heavy on the posturing and fluff, but it gets you where you need to go. Does this miniseries feel like a must-read companion to the Blood Hunt event? It’s too early to tell.
Midnight Sons: Blood Hunt #1 begins with a brief prologue. Blade meets with his trained squad of vampire killers in an out-of-the-way diner for a covert meeting. Before you can say, “May I have a cup of coffee?” Blade wipes them all out.
Meanwhile, we catch up with Tulip (see the recently concluded Blade series, also by Bryan Hill) in Arizona as she approaches Danny Ketch for help finding out what’s wrong with Blade. After a Ghost Rider penance stare and a hot cup of tea, Danny decides to help, but only if Tulip lends a hand to Danny and Johnny Blaze with a different but related problem. Tulip agrees.
The three ambush an armored convoy in the desert, populated by vampire mercenaries who work for a soulless corporation seeking to capitalize on the Darkforce Dimension’s overflow. After a quick bazooka launch and several Hellfire attacks, the vampire mercs are dead, and Ghost Rider destroys the tentacled, multi-eyed thing stored in the cargo truck for transport.
Elsewhere, Victoria Montesi enters a cave where a shaman has been possessed by a demonic spirit. To remedy the situation, Montesi casts a blood magic spell and brings forth Lilith to cast the demonic spirit out. Later, Danny Ketch finds Montesi to bring her back to the team.
What’s great about Midnight Sons: Blood Hunt #1? Fans of Midnight Sons will have a lot to like in this issue as every member gets a moment to shine, even Blade. Adding Lilith to the team makes for an ironic twist, and Hill comfortably balances dialog with action for a solid issue.
What’s not so great about Midnight Sons: Blood Hunt #1? For a 3-part miniseries, this issue spends a lot of time making introductions and engaging in side quests that have no relevance to the Blood Hunt event. Yes, it’s great to show what the characters do as an introduction, but you get the impression this issue is only worth reading for new readers who’ve never heard of the Midnight Sons, which defeats the purpose of a tie-in.
Further, the two action scenes lack stakes, urgency, or any sense that the heroes were in any real danger.
How’s the Art? Germán Peralta’s art, like the script, is perfectly fine. Peralta’s character designs and figure work are solid, Arthur Hesli’s coloring work is excellent, and the overall comic has a better-than-average set of visuals.

Final Thoughts
Midnight Sons: Blood Hunt #1 begins the 3-part tie-in to explain how the Midnight Sons reunite to confront their old teammate, Blade. Hill’s script and Peralta’s art are perfectly fine, and the story gets new readers on board with decent introductions to the Midnight Sons, but seasoned readers won’t learn anything new about the team, and this first issue lacks urgency.
