The age-old stereotype of the “nerd versus jock” is no longer accurate, if it ever was. Many people who enjoy video games and comic books also have an interest in sports. On the flip side, sports fans can also be into geeky hobbies. This includes top professional athletes like Noah Lyles, the fastest man in the world who is also a huge Yu-Gi-Oh fan.
If you’ve been following the NBC family’s coverage of the 2024 Olympics, you may have seen the 27-year-old sprinter in action. Lyles, along with other American athletes like Sha’Carri Richardson, Simone Biles, and Katie Ledecky, have been standout stars of the Paris games. Lyles is a strong contender for the Gold in the men’s 100-meter dash, with races scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, as well as the 200-meter dash and 4×100-meter relay.
Team USA Track & Field Star Noah Lyles Is the Biggest Geek at the Olympics
Lyles is the current world champion in the 100- and 200-meter dashes, showcasing his athletic prowess. Alongside his sporting achievements, Lyles is known for his nerdy side. During the U.S. Olympic Trials, he made waves by bringing Yu-Gi-Oh cards to the track. Displaying a Blue-Eyes White Dragon card, a powerful and iconic card from the series, Lyles added a unique touch to his races.
Carrying a mysterious briefcase during the trials, Lyles later revealed it contained all five parts of Exodia the Forbidden One, a set of cards that grant an automatic victory when held together. With the Head of Exodia in hand, Lyles won the 100-meter final and secured his spot in Paris as the national champion.
Lyles is just one example of athletes who embrace their geeky side. At past Olympics, competitors have shown their love for anime and superheroes, blending their athletic talent with their nerdy passions.
