Is Sony already gearing up for the arrival of the PS6?
The potential release of the PlayStation 6, speculated to be Sony’s successor to the PlayStation 5, may be closer than anticipated. Surprisingly, the PS5 is approaching its fourth anniversary since its initial launch in 2020. While it may seem like the PS5 is just getting started, Sony has indicated that the platform is reaching its final stages.
According to Bloomberg, Sony SVP Naomi Matsuoka mentioned during the company’s recent financial briefing that the PS5 is transitioning into the “latter stage” of its life. Matsuoka did not provide specific details on when the PS5 might reach its end, but Sony is clearly looking ahead. Matsuoka also noted that the sales pace of PS5 consoles is expected to decline in the upcoming fiscal period.
“Looking ahead, PS5 will enter the latter stage of its life cycle,” Matsuoka stated. “As such, we will focus more on balancing profitability and sales. Consequently, we anticipate a decrease in the annual sales pace of PS5 hardware from the next fiscal year.”
While it may come as a surprise that the PS5 is approaching its final years, this timeline aligns with the lifespan of the PS4. Released in 2013, the PS4 remained the primary platform for around seven years before the introduction of the PS5. Following a similar pattern, the PS6 could potentially launch in 2027. However, Sony’s public acknowledgment of the PS5 being in its “latter stage” suggests that new PlayStation hardware might arrive sooner compared to the transition from PS4 to PS5.
