Nintendo will not be present, but Pokemon will make an appearance.
Gamescom has revealed that The Pokemon Company will be a highlighted feature in August. This announcement follows Nintendo’s confirmation of their absence from the show in Germany. Speculations about a potential “Switch 2” were fueled by rumors of a closed-door event during Gamescom 2023, where select members of the gaming media were reportedly shown the new console. While games like The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom and Mario & Luigi: Brothership will not be showcased, there is a possibility of news regarding Pokemon Legends: Z-A.
The unveiling of Pokemon Legends: Z-A took place on Pokemon Day in January, but information about the game has been scarce. Set in the Kalos region from Pokemon X and Y, the game will feature the Mega Evolution mechanic. Details about the storyline or any connections to the events of X and Y, similar to Legends: Arceus with Pokemon Diamond and Pearl, remain unknown. The anticipated release of the game is scheduled for 2025.
Following the release of the first Pokemon Legends in January 2022, it is likely that Legends: Z-A will debut sometime after that month. With Donkey Kong Country Returns HD slated for release on January 16th, it seems improbable for Nintendo to launch two major games simultaneously in the first half of 2025. Thus, fans can expect more information to be unveiled soon, possibly at Gamescom, regarding a release date or initial gameplay impressions.
Although the extent of Pokemon’s involvement at Gamescom remains uncertain, the presence of Pokemon Play Lab, offering insights into the TCG, Pokemon Scarlet and Violet, and Pokemon Unite, suggests a significant presence. The timing of Pokemon Worlds, concluding on August 18th, just three days before Gamescom, hints at a potential announcement during the tournament, with further details to follow at the expo. As both events draw closer, fans eagerly anticipate more information!
