Being a huge fan of the Skottie Young Marvel Animated statues series by Diamond Select Toys, it’s no secret that I was thrilled to finally complete a team in the line this winter. The Fantastic Four is on its way, but the Guardians of the Galaxy beat them to the punch. The Marvel Animated Drax statue, which completes the movie roster, is now shipping. Here’s my review…
Gentle Giant launched the Marvel Animated Guardians of the Galaxy lineup back in 2016 with the Skottie Young Star-Lord mini statue. I never imagined the line would become as expansive and successful as it has, nor did I think the team would ever be fully assembled. Animated Rocket & Groot arrived in early 2017, and Gamora joined in 2021. Now, after over 7 years, the iconic GOTG movie roster is finally complete with the addition of Drax in his glorious resin Skottie Young statue form.
Like all the pieces in the line, Drax comes in a colorful cardboard box adorned with attractive photos and a character bio on the back. The packaging is simple yet effective. The resin figure of Drax is securely nestled in styrofoam within the box, along with his authenticity certificate card placed inside the lid. Limited to 3000 pieces, Drax maintains the standard for most of the line.
Upon opening the box, I was immediately struck by the vibrant and fun shade of green of Drax’s skin. While Gamora’s colors are darker and more muted, the Drax Animated statue stands out on a shelf or in any setting. The magenta and green color scheme of Drax is visually captivating and perfectly suited for this style of art and collectibles. The blue shading on his pants provides a pleasing contrast to the black. Despite not having an abundance of intricate details, Drax’s tattoos are cleanly painted and look fantastic. The paintwork on this mini statue is expertly applied.
Although slightly bulkier and heavier compared to other statues in the Marvel Animated series, DST has wisely kept the price of Drax below $60. Charging more would likely raise eyebrows among potential buyers considering the 5″ size of Drax. Nonetheless, the statue has a satisfying weight to it, giving it a quality resin feel rather than resembling a cheap Funko Pop Vinyl figure.
Drax is a hand-numbered limited edition statue, just like the other items in this line, with only 3000 pieces produced. Overall, while Drax wasn’t a character I desperately wanted a statue of (aside from completing my GOTG collection), I’m pleasantly surprised by how much I adore this piece. The vibrant colors and playful proportions truly bring Skottie Young’s artwork to life. The inclusion of Drax enhances the entire GOTG series. It’s an excellent addition.
