With two movies winning dozens of awards and a third on the way, the Spider-Verse film franchise is an undisputed juggernaut in both animation and superhero movies. It’s been lauded for its unique visual style and ability to adapt lesser known characters to the big screen while still maintaining what made fans love them in the first place. While these movies have been a jewel in the Sony/Marvel crown since they premiered, it sounds like Miles Morales might not be the only legacy hero to get that treatment.
Production Designer/Producer Yuhki Demers (Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse) posted to Twitter that he, along with writer/director Patrick Harpin (My Dad the Bounty Hunter), has been in talks with with Warner Bros. about making a Batman Beyond animated film. Their initial meeting five months ago turned an initial “never” into a “maybe”, and they’ve been working their way up the ladder since then. They’ve even come up with concept art for how the movie might look:
Debuting in 1999, Batman Beyond is set in the futuristic, cyberpunk Neo-Gotham of 2039. With Bruce Wayne too old to continue his crusade against crime, he turns to Terry McGinnis to take up the cowl. Continuing the story from Batman: The Animated Series, Batman Beyond saw old characters return as well as introducing a host of memorable new ones. It ran for three seasons with a direct-to-video film Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker, winning a total of two daytime Emmys and three Annie Awards. If greenlit, this will be the animated series’ first theatrical film.
