A fan-made version of the canceled Fallout project codenamed Van Buren, which was Black Isle’s second attempt at creating Fallout 3, is now available on Nexus Mods. This version offers a glimpse into what could have been, as it follows a different storyline and gameplay style compared to the Fallout 3 released by Bethesda.
Van Buren was originally envisioned as an isometric RPG with a top-down perspective similar to the first two Fallout games. The player’s decisions would have a significant impact on the game, affecting quests, skills, and interactions with different communities.
The Fallout Yesterday – Van Buren mod on Nexus Mods allows players to experience Black Isle’s original vision for Fallout 3. The recent 0.6 update added new quests, vehicles, weapons, traits, perks, main story content, bug fixes, and more. However, the mod currently requires a specific character build focused on Science and Repairs to complete.
The release of the 0.6 update on Nexus Mods and the availability of the project’s code on GitLab make it a great time to explore Van Buren. While elements of Van Buren made their way into Fallout: New Vegas, fans of the original concept will appreciate the faithfulness of Fallout Yesterday to the source material.
