We were all hopeful that HBO’s The Penguin would be good, but did anyone truly anticipate it being this exceptional? The individuals working behind the scenes did, and now, with the show’s success, it may just be the start of Batman’s villains making appearances on HBO.
“I can confirm that we would love to do more. We are already in discussions with HBO about [more],” executive producer Matt Reeves shared with The Wrap. “The opportunity to explore characters that wouldn’t have the creative freedom on HBO, as we did with Oz (Colin Farrell’s character), is something we are discussing with HBO. They are very enthusiastic about the idea. We really hope to make it happen.”
“We have The Batman. We have The Penguin. Who knows what’s next,” Reeves added.
What’s next is The Batman Part II, which Reeves is preparing for a 2025 shoot and 2026 release. This film will continue The Penguin’s story, much like how The Penguin continued The Batman’s story, and Reeves acknowledges the challenge of ensuring everything fits together seamlessly.
“We had to organize it in a way that the movie transitions smoothly into the show,” Reeves explained. “We shift perspectives. We delve deep into Oz’s character in a way we couldn’t in the movies, then transition back to the next movie and incorporate him into that story. It required careful coordination to create the space for a deep exploration of the character, as Lauren LeFranc did.”
If a second show featuring another Bat-villain were to happen, it appears it would come after The Batman Part II. Speculation becomes more difficult as new villains are likely to be introduced, in addition to the confirmed appearances of Penguin, Riddler, Catwoman, and Joker. Batman has no shortage of adversaries.
If HBO considers exploring another Batman villain in a long-form series, it would likely be one with significant recognition. With Penguin having his show and Riddler and Catwoman explored in the first movie, the question arises: who else remains? Would HBO venture into a Joker series after the recent events with Joker: Folie à Deux? Are there other prominent villains to consider?
Share your speculations below and catch up on The Penguin, now available for streaming on Max.
