Two Japanese-inspired RPGs that are drawing inspiration from classic genre titles are currently experiencing great success on Kickstarter.
One of these games, Runa, has been described as a blend of Xenoblade Chronicles and Persona, featuring lush environments and social systems that allow players to form relationships with characters in the game world. Developed by a team based in Madrid, Runa has exceeded its crowdfunding goal, raising over $375,000 or £296,494 – 750% more than its original target.
Runa has also achieved most of its stretch goals, which include the addition of a fishing mini-game, farming and cooking mini-games, English voice acting, extra quests, datable characters, and a secret goal unlocked after the campaign’s completion: more ultimate skills for combat.
The other successful Kickstarter project is Alzara: Radiant Echoes, which draws inspiration from Final Fantasy 9 and Nintendo’s Golden Sun series. This game reached its crowdfunding goal in under two days and has currently raised over $125,000/£100,000.
Backers of Alzara have unlocked stretch goals for English voice acting and additional funding for the game. If the campaign reaches its next stretch goal, which has not been quantified, composer Motoi Sakuraba, known for his work on Dark Souls and Star Ocean, will reportedly contribute to the entire soundtrack.
Japanese RPGs have seen a successful year with the release of titles such as Like A Dragon: Infinite Wealth, Persona 3 Reload, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, and the highly anticipated Dragon’s Dogma 2.
