Welcome back to Upcoming Comics! If you missed last week’s announcement, we’re currently seeking new comic book reviewers. If you’re interested, follow the steps below. We’ll keep this post at the top of Upcoming Comics for a few weeks to ensure everyone has a chance to see it.
Step #1: Introduce yourself. Tell us who you are, where you’re from, and your schedule. What makes you a good writer? Have you read any literature on writing, such as “Understanding Comics: The Invisible Art” by Scott McCloud or “Story” by Robert McKee? What do you know about comic art techniques? We want a reviewer who can pay equal attention to both the illustrations and the story/characterization. Also, share your connection to The Dark Knight. We’re looking for passionate fans, not just those familiar with the big blockbusters. Impress us with a personal story or show us how far your obsession with Batman has taken you. Whether it’s a Bat tattoo or cosplay, we want to know. We want reviewers who truly live and breathe Gotham City (although you don’t have to be crazy enough to want to live there).
Step #2: Discuss your experience with these characters. The more comics you’ve read, the better. Let us know which comic book eras you’re most familiar with and unfamiliar with. What classic graphic novels have you not read yet, but feel ashamed about? What are your all-time favorite Batman stories? If you’ve watched all the shows or played every video game, tell us! The more information you provide, the more seriously we’ll consider you.
Step #3: Review some comics. There’s no better way for us to know your skills than through your reviews. Write two reviews, each with a minimum of 500 words. One review should be for an issue you liked, and the other for an issue you did not like. They should be current comics published within the past year. Don’t worry if your opinion differs from ours—we’re not looking for people who echo our views. Different perspectives are welcome! Just demonstrate your writing capabilities. Write in the style of one of our reviews, including a “Recommended If” and “Overall” section, and give a rating from 1 to 10.
Submit your application to ReviewerTryouts@gmail.com as a PDF or Word document. There’s no immediate deadline, and we’ll announce when tryouts are closed on Upcoming Comics. If we like what we see, we’ll start an email correspondence with you and give you a few more fun challenges. If you pass those tests, we’ll assign you some books to review. This is a paid gig with perks like free comics and interview opportunities with DC talent. However, don’t expect to become rich from writing comic reviews or quit your day job. This is primarily a passion project that offers a rare chance to connect with fellow Batman fans.
