We often highlight how eastern culture is taking over in the west, so it’s rare to see when the opposite occurs. Iconic Comics, home to popular series such as Kamen America, Arc Athena, and Soulfinder, has scored a huge partnership with the Japanese merchandising firm, MOVIC.
MOVIC is a Japanese company that creates merchandise such as CDs, cards, figures, pins and other products. According to the MOVIC website, they specialize in Japanese anime and manga related products, which makes Iconic Comics accomplishment all the more impressive.
Iconic Comics Kamen America has been steadily gaining popularity in Japan. Created by Timothy Lim and Mark Pellegrini, the story and art style borrows from the rich style of anime and manga found in Japan, while still maintaining a Western superhero vibe. And this approach has paid off.
In their announcement, Iconic comics points out:
MOVIC, one of the largest companies specializing in merchandise pertaining to anime and manga, has partnered with KAMEN AMERICA to provide a new line of goods!
99% of their products are from Japanese franchises and properties. Having KAMEN AMERICA be offered by MOVIC is an extremely rare occasion for any American property!
So, this is indeed a watershed moment for American comics. While Marvel and DC have dabbled with trying to entice the Japanese audience, Iconic Comics is one of the first American comic companies to do so organically. Congratulations to Timothy Lim, Mark Pellegrini and the other hardworking creators at Iconic Comics for securing this partnership. While some Indie creators spend time dividing their fan base with petty internet beefs, the team at Iconic Comics continue to make good comics and forge new paths.
