This past month, the release date for the highly anticipated WandaVision spin-off, Agatha All Along, was finally unveiled. We also received a promising update on the show’s other spin-off, Vision Quest.
All the excitement surrounding the return of the show’s characters has brought back both good and bad memories from the (now) three-year-old MCU entry. To clarify, I still believe the show is great and is one of the MCU’s best projects. By “bad memories,” I mean more about the impact the show had on the fandom overall. It arguably created a problem that unfortunately hasn’t gone away since.

When WandaVision first premiered in January 2021, it was not only the MCU’s first show on Disney+, but also the first project from the franchise following Spider-Man: Far From Home in 2019. Due to the pandemic, many things, including the shows, were delayed, so fans were eagerly awaiting new content and the beginning of a new era for the MCU. The show did not disappoint. It became an overnight sensation, with the first few episodes receiving acclaim for their tributes to classic sitcoms and hints towards the larger storyline.
I don’t know if people even remember how big the discussions surrounding this show were. Every week, there were immediate theories posted online about what was happening. Some even believed this show would bring back the “water cooler discussion” for television, where people would eagerly share their thoughts at work the next day. I recall going to a doctor’s appointment during this time, and even my doctor asked me if I thought Mephisto was behind the story. It was a crazy time to be a Marvel fan.

However, with the excitement came some negative aspects. People online started coming up with wild theories about the show. Fake leaks circulated, suggesting Magneto, Reed Richards, or the X-Men from the Fox universe would appear. The biggest theory was that Mephisto would be the ultimate villain, but that did not happen.
Some predictions did come true, such as Agnes being Agatha and the Vision in the show not being the actual Vision from Infinity War. But many outlandish theories did not materialize, leading to backlash when the finale aired. Some fans were upset the story didn’t go the way they wanted, which has been a recurring issue with major projects in the franchise since then.
But for me, looking back at WandaVision, it was the last time the discourse within the MCU was fun. Despite the crazy theories, it was enjoyable to discuss them with others and focus on the performances and directing in the show. I hope one day we can recapture that feeling WandaVision initially gave, where everyone was just having a good time and invested in the story and characters.

As wild as the theories got, it was enjoyable to talk about them and appreciate the great aspects of the show. Unfortunately, the discourse surrounding the MCU has become more negative and pessimistic, similar to Star Wars. Iman Vellani, Ms. Marvel’s actress, recently mentioned how fandoms should be about enjoying things with others and offering constructive criticism. I hope we can return to that positive atmosphere in the future, where the focus is on the story and characters rather than constant negativity.
