About the Book:
Cobra Commander has risen from beneath the surface and left his home with Cobra La. He is on a mission to build an army of humans on the surface and locate an Energon source for a project that he’s working on. In the Florida Everglades Cobra Commander stumbles upon a group of gun smugglers that may be perfect for what he has in mind.
Reader’s Notes:
I am enjoying Cobra Commander more and more as we get further into this series. This issue moves the plot of how Cobra Commander became so powerful along, More importantly, this issue is a coming out party for the Dreadnoks.
The Dreadnoks first came on the comic book scene in issue #25 of G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero. The minions of Zartan have always been depicted in a similar way to the minions in Despicable Me. They mean to do right by their boss; but along the way they are going to mess up, with glorious fallout coming from it.
This rendition of the Dreadnoks… Wow. This group is ruthless. They are intimidating. They’re more than happy to F&@! someone up if Zartan asks them to. These are the Dreadnoks we deserved in our childhood!
I am very fond of this cover. After nearly 40 years of the Dreadnoks’ and Cobra Commander’s mistakes thwarting goals, I can easily envision this battle being instigated by Buzzer. I can almost hear Buzzer saying, “We’ve all thought of doing it. Don’t hate me because I get to live the dream!” to Ripper and company.
I can’t say enough about the artwork in the interior pages of this issue. It’s a dream come true for Dreadnok fans! We get to see the Thunder Machine in all of its glory. Buzzer, Ripper, and Zarana look incredible.
For those out there that have trouble with graphic artwork, there are a couple of panels that strongly suggest that someone forced characters to choose violence. In those panels we can see the outcome of that was…. Messy. You may want to avert your eyes.
As a geek on a budget I believe that Cobra Commander #2 is a MUST READ for fans of the “G.I. Joe” franchise. This story arc and the other Skybound titles have left me feeling like I’m nine years old again. I can’t recall the last time I was this excited about four different current titles in my favorite universe. I intend to savor every last letter of these books.
